Esther Mahlangu: A Retrospective, an exhibition curated by Nontobeko Ntombela, celebrates the 50-year career of the acclaimed contemporary artist. Hosted by Iziko Museums of South Africa and BMW, the retrospective will be on display at Iziko South African National Gallery from February 18 to August 11, 2024, before embarking on a global tour, starting at the Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa, and continuing to the United States in early 2026.
During 1991, Mahlangu made history as the first African woman to create a BMW Art Car. This groundbreaking collaboration fused African art with modern automotive design, making a significant impact in the art world. The exhibition will showcase Mahlangu’s iconic BMW 525i Art Car, making its first return to South Africa in over 30 years. Additionally, the artist has been selected to participate in the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Adriano Pedrosa.
Curator Nontobeko Ntombela reflects on Mahlangu’s journey as a testament to passion, innovation, and resilience. The retrospective honors Esther Mahlangu’s unique approach to art, blending African cultures with modernity and the contemporary. Celebrating Mahlangu’s voice, agency, and pioneering spirit, the exhibition symbolizes her self-expression, determination, and creativity. Using color and form, the exhibition showcases Mahlangu’s contribution to contemporary art over nearly seven decades, featuring over 100 artworks from global collections alongside historic photographs and a short film.
