The Virchow Prize 2024, endorsed by the President of the German Bundestag, will award a prize of 500,000 € to individuals who have made significant contributions to the preservation of human and planetary health.
On July 15, 2024, Lucy Gilson and Johan Rockström will be honored with the Virchow Prize 2024 for their comprehensive and systemic approach to protecting human and planetary health.
Both recipients share a common commitment to human well-being and sustainability, understanding the interconnectedness of health, environmental, and social systems. Together, Gilson and Rockström are working towards a more resilient, healthier, safer, and fairer world, in line with the values of the Virchow Prize and the United Nations 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals.
Lucy Gilson is a leading expert in health policy and systems, currently serving as the head of the Health Policy and Systems Division at Cape Town University in South Africa and as a professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the UK. Her research focuses on driving transformative change towards sustainable, resilient, and just governance, advocating for people-centered health systems, and implementing innovative approaches to improve access to quality healthcare. Gilson has made significant contributions to advancing universal health coverage and equitable healthcare access.
Johan Rockström is a leading figure in the field of climate impact research, holding positions at the Potsdam Institute in Germany and Stockholm University in Sweden. He also serves as Chief Scientist of Conservation International in the United States. Rockström is known for his work on the planetary boundaries framework, which sets out the safe limits within which humanity can thrive sustainably for generations to come. This framework addresses issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, freshwater use, and nutrient cycles, all of which have a direct impact on human health.
Gilson and Rockström have been influential in promoting a comprehensive and interconnected approach to health, which has had a significant impact on global policy. Their science-based framework offers a pathway for addressing a wide range of health challenges worldwide, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research in working towards the shared objective of „Health for All.”
